PAPER DIAMOND A Headlining Tour, A New EP on Mad Decent And He's Only Just Begun
- Dominic Painter
King King Night Club, Hollywood, CA: A man emerges from behind a wall of sound franticly waving an iPad like a wand, commanding bass lines, drums and even the crowd to do his bidding for a full 2 hours. Hypnotic patterns and great flashes bolt out from a lighting rig strong enough to give the entire front row a tan so deep that Pauly D would give them a hi-five in approval. This is the Tiger Style Tour, and the maestro is Boulder, Colorado’s Paper Diamond, one of 2011’s emerging artists who, off the strength of his Levitate EP (Pretty Lights Music) and numerous remixes (google Kanye West “Power” Paper Diamond remix), is on the road for his first headlining tour. In the year big room House took over, there is an Electronic scene emerging that is still nameless, forgoing the four-to-the-floor structure for something not quite Hip-Hop, Dubstep, or even Moombahton. Post-Dubstep. Future Bass. These titles don’t seem to truly capture the essence of it. Besides Star Slinger, Pretty Lights, and SBTRKT, he is one of the leading producers in this movement. “Can I make some Dubstep stuff. Yeah. Can I make Moombahton stuff. Yeah. Do I make Rap songs. Yeah. Do I make Pop music. Yeah. So, all my stuff is kind of a blend of all those things.” Formerly Alex B, the “Paper Diamond” name is a reinvention (he often refers to it as a project) and way of broadening his style without having to abandon his former sound. “What’s interesting about the Paper Diamond stuff, since Levitate came out I probably made like 100 songs and so the new EP’s that I’m coming out with are the most cohesive ones that match what I’m trying to do with the Paper Diamond stuff.” This vast backlog of music packs his live show and will also be featured on his upcoming EP Wavesight scheduled for release May 3rd on Diplo’s Mad Decent/Jeffries label. Raised in the mid-west, a career in electronic music wouldn’t seem a likely option. “Well, I’m originally from Kansas City, which is interesting because musically there’s not shit in Kansas City that’s comparable to what’s happening, you know.” Regardless, music was his drive since the age of 4 when he began playing violin up through high school where he took music production courses ultimately leading him to college at Middle Tennessee State University, one of the country’s leading music productions schools. “I dropped out of college with one semester left when I was 19 and I’ve been doing music exclusively ever since.” From KC to TN he made what would be the career-defining move to Boulder, a place that would later become one of the leading U.S. cities for electronic music. “Before I moved to Colorado there wasn’t like this huge Electronic movement. [Now] the Electronic music [scene] is so huge, friends of mine like Pretty Lights are selling 10’s of thousands of tickets.”
“Before all these DJs and everything was popping up I was in a live Electronic music band which was kind of the hot thing at that time. Then [the scene] moved into more of DJs and producers which, for me, was great because I was already a producer. When I wasn’t playing in the band as much anymore I just had all these productions, that’s what I had been doing the whole time.” It was at this time that he began releasing Hip-Hop inspired sample driven music under the name Alex B and co-founded the respected label Elm And Oak that now has a roster featuring Cherub and Two Fresh among others. This early period found him in league with emerging Post J. Dilla era producers including Flying Lotus. “Hip-Hop and all that stuff is deeply rooted within me just like every other kind of music. People wear the “Dilla Changed My Life” shirt, but really, that fucked the world up permanently. I always wanted to be the dude making the weirdest shit but still made sense, that was listenable.”
“I cared a lot about what other people, producers and whatever thought about my shit, and now, once I legitimately stopped caring what they think, I feel like I’m starting to come into my own.” Like a super hero who hides behind a moniker in order to show the world his true abilities, the Paper Diamond project has freed Alex to push his creative boundaries without restraint. Part of this freedom is the ability to put out music for free, a method practiced not only by him but also Colorado cohort and friend Pretty Lights. “It used to be that musicians needed a record label to do their thing but now you can put out your own shit for free, go on tour and make some music for movies or whatever and have a better living than before.” It’s one thing to give away what is yours, but as a businessman it seems implausible that you can convince your labels roster that this is the right way to go. Elm And Oak have done this by being a completely in-house operation which backs their artists with management, tour support, packaging and merch design, and video production. Hype from free music is transformed into profitable show bookings and song placement in movies and TV, A business model that should be followed by the majors. “I know how people get their music now-a-days. I know how I get my music. I’m with the times, I embrace technology and so I’m going with that. If you move with the times, you continue to move forward and if you don’t, then you don’t. I’m down with that.” The Tiger Style tour is proof that his business strategy is working, having sold out numerous stops in the west, including LA and San Francisco, before tackling more of the country throughout the month. “You know it’s crazy to come through and be coming to these towns for the first time and have people so eager to see it and even singing the words during the show. It’s pretty wild.” Electronic Music is multi-dimensional in a way no other genre has proven, spawning new movements every year as we have seen with Dubstep and now Moombahton. What will this genre be called? Movements need a name, but at this stage Paper Diamond is reluctant to do it himself, seemingly viewing a title almost as a cage. A limitation. “I just don’t care, I’m down to make whatever. I’m writing all the time and I’m just letting it come out and whatever feels like the very best of the very best and some of my favorite shit for where I’m at musically right now, that’s what I’m putting out through Paper Diamond.”
