It's that time of year where we look back, review and determine whether we will give a damn about the past 360 days in the grand scheme of things. All-in-all I think our cultural suppliers of all things dope did a commendable job. Anyone who complains about not finding anything good anymore either hasn't heard about the internet or is the most cynical Hipster known to man. That's why we at HipsterOverkill have picked the brains of a number of well known entertainers as well as the behind the scene players (who are responsible for us getting to know about our favorite artists in the first place) about what we should have paid attention to in 2011. Instagram, The Weekend, Juicy J and Knife Party were big winners that should be on your hit list. Take some time to absorb it all and get right for the new year.) | EC TWINS (Los Angeles by way of the U.K.)
In a break out year for the duo, as well as Electronic Music, the brothers recount what made it so memorable. TOP 10: HIGHLIGHTS OF 2011 1. ResuRection - EC TWINS & REMY LE DUC (PERFECTO RECORDS) - We made this song after performing with Paul Oakenfold and Chuckie on Tour. It's a track they could both play in their sets. It took over a year to be released, but it made the cut for 2011 when it came out last week! 2. EC TWINS T Shirts - The new design with the "heart hands" and patriotic Stars and Stripes / Union Jack color scheme makes packing for a tour simple and fast!
3. Marquee Las Vegas - We were very hands on in helping Las Vegas become the Ibiza of the USA, it was a conscious move. Once Marquee had destroyed the cities night life scene, by booking electronic music acts, every other venue was forced to follow suit to be competitive. The result was tourists from all over the globe arriving in Vegas knowing nothing about House music and leaving as big fans. What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas.
4. Electric Daisy Carnival LAS VEGAS - We performed Friday and Saturday night and stayed in Vegas to perform at TAO Beach on Sunday! This took Vegas' EDM reputation to the next level and we had 3 amazing days.
5. LITTLE WHITE DOVES - DIRTY VEGAS (EC TWINS & REMY LE DUC REMIX) - The hit record that ever was! To us, this is still one of the biggest tunes of 2011, deep, moving lyrics and epic chord progressions. It was a huge success in terms of propelling our careers forward and packing out our gigs, but as far as mainstream success, that never really happened. That's what makes the tune so cool! It's an underground, cult classic.
6. BILLBOARD MAGAZINE announces EDM as the leading genre of music in 2011 and predicts growth in 2012 - It almost killed us, but we're obviously getting there!
7. BIGkids - DRUM IN YOUR CHEST (EC TWINS & REMY LE DUC REMIX) - We were very happy to be on the remix package for this exciting new act coming out of London! We worked on the track in September and blew up the hip, swingy vocals into a dance floor stomper that will be out early 2012!
8. ADELE - SOMEONE LIKE YOU (EC TWINS & REMY LE DUC REMIX) - We wanted to prove that we could smash a ballad into dance floor fire, so we pumped out a "white label dirty" of Adeles SOMEONE LIKE YOU. Somewhere along the line BPM radio got a hold of it and our unofficial remix ended up topping their charts.
9. Breaking attendance records - in 2011 EC TWINS shows broke records in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, San Francisco and more in terms of attendance and gross earnings behind the bar. It's always nice to leave an impression on the promoters and prove to the crowd that this is for real.
10. DISCO CURE - EC TWINS - Ironically, the only record that we have ever released that did not chart was our homage to the late, great Nick Ashford. It's funkier than our sets in the big rooms, but we always have and always will love a soulful vocal and a pumping bass line. It's one of our own personal favorites that we have produced. |

Dubstep's newest big boy conquered all year long with Datsik thanks to their monster hit "King Kong". Here he recounts the top moments of this monumental year that christened his official arrival on the scene.
TOP 10: MOMENTS OF 2011 1. Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas (all days, hands down the craziest 3 days of my life)
2. “King Kong” w/Datsik charting number one for a month straight
3. Club Beta in Denver (this show was through the roof amazing. the 100 free shirts at the door to the first 100 went in minutes)
4. Doing 2 tag sets with Dieselboy; one in Canada one in America (that childhood dream of tagging with ur all time fav. artist from back in the days achieved)
5. Every Dub Nation show of this year (Dub Nation is not capable of throwing a weak show no matter what city it’s in. Easily some of the best shows this year have all been Dub Nation's)
6. Subhuman tour shows in Canada and America (spending tour time with DSL and SmashGordon on the road was so badass! looking forward to more of it next year)
7. Ultra Week Miami 2011 (It was so insanely fun i can't honestly remember how many days I was there but damn that was amazing seeing everyone that week)
8. Special guesting during Borgore's set at STARSCAPE. (talk about wow moment!!!! those kids went hard that night)
9. DC Massive (first time i ever got a reload on my opener tune. and it happened to be a work in progress i had yet to finish. the roar of that crowd gave me chills)
10. Meeting new fans and friends along the way in each state and country I visited this year. I would not change a thing about it. I've gained some amazing fans 'n friends this year and made stronger the relationships with one's I’ve already had before :)

ANOTHER LOOK:HipsterOverkill writer Anna Falzetta and co-founder Shawn Lucas offer some more insight into 2011 |

Well, well, well, what can I say? 2011 has been a pretty amazing year for music. Over the past 12 months, the music industry and fans alike have witnessed some major changes. Artists like The Weeknd and Odd Future created a new formula for self-made success by posting free digital versions of their complete albums to their websites. Dubstep broke through on the mainstream level with artists the likes of Brittany Spears, Kanye West and Jay Z sampling dubstep on their most recent albums. The rapidly growing popularity of music blogs made finding new music and getting fresh remixes more accessable than ever before. Skrillex made the October cover of Spin Magazine, an almost impossible feat for any Dance music producer let alone one who’s widely known for his tracks that are categorized in the sub-genres of dance; Electro House and Dubstep. The rave scene exploded at the Electric Daisy Carnival in Nevada reaching an astounding attendance of approximately 200,000 raver kids over its 3 days. A new dance music-crazed generation that seems more than eager to shuffle their way into a new electronic, bass-heavy frontier.Even with the eruption of Dance music, indie gems still shined though. The self titled second release from Bon Iver, Ritual Union by Little Dragon and the early dropped singles from Lana Del Rey’s highly anticipated 2012 album Born to Die were just some of the many excellent 2011 drops that were more than enough proof that the indie scene isn’t going anywhere. The remixes of many indie tracks that dominated blogs this year seemed to indicate that the two genres have formed a sort of harmonious symbiotic relationship. (*For recommendations and links, see my picks for Best Remixes of 2011 below)
Therefore, it is with humble appreciation for the year in music that I have just observed that I present to you my top track list of 2011.
Now drink some champagne, stfu, turn up the volume and two-step your way in to 2012.
- ANNA OVERKILL
TOP 10: REMIXES
TOP 10: ORIGINAL SONGS |
Shawn @ Face Off in DC
SHAWN aka MAXIMUS JONX (Washington D.C. / Brazil) Madman / MC / Man of Leisure
TOP 10: Stuff I Was Feeling (in no particular order)1. Tiger Blood - Charlie Sheen reached critical mass in 2011. He was able to push the envelop of habitual line-stepping (pun intended) to iconic proportions. Win, loose, draw or rehab... You will remember the name.
2. Music Festivals - From Ultra Music Festival, Bonnaroo, Starscape, EDC, Electric Zoo, Camp Bisco, Coachella to Tomorrowland and beyond; Young music lovers were exposed to huge productions of live music (EDM especially), lasers and lights, art, culture and maybe a few mind altering substances. I was blessed to run a muck at more than a few and witness the magic up close.
3. Adele "Rolling in the Deep" - Nuff said.
4. Bacon - Now, I have had a bit of a food crush on bacon for as long as I can remember, but 2011 was the year of the bacon. When you have everything from DJ's tossing "rave bacon" from booths to Epic Meal Time to bacon scented and flavored personal lubricant and #baconporn as a trending topic... yeah. All hail the winner of all meat.
5. Occupy Wall Street - Even if the media would have you believe that every last person out there standing up and trying to bring awareness to the faults of a system that has seen better days are just dirty hippies looking for hand outs, I still applaud them for going out of the comfort zone and getting angry about how we've been screwed.
6. Hungary - The first of what I hope is many a Country to burn and remove all Monsanto GMO crops. Get familiar.
7. Foster the People Pumped Up Kicks" And the most viral "how to dance to Dubstep" video ever. I wanna learn how to pop and lock now.
8. Jameson Irish Whiskey - Let's just say I've helped put a few kids in Ireland through College.
9. Traveling - I was able to see Sao Paolo, Rio, Phuket, NYC, Miami, LA, Chicago, Memphis, Charleston, Philly, Denver, Vegas, Baltimore, the Grand Canyon for the last 5 minutes of sunlight during a Coast to Coast adventure in helping a brother move. Don't think I'm quite done, but 2011 was definitely spent on the go.
10. Working for myself - Taking a leap of faith, I stepped away from working a regular job and into exploring options outside of the box this year. Between Ov3rKill Entertainment, rocking mics, producing music videos and slinging BBQ sammiches out of a food truck... I found things I enjoyed doing, and figured out how to make a living doing them. Thanks Dad, best advice ever.
Happy New Year everyone. Big things coming in 2012. Ov3rKill.
