Having done the group thing for some years,
Dan Black decided it was time to be singular. More importantly, he decided that the many genres that inspire his creativity needed to do the same. With the release of his album
UN (French for "one"), he has taken various styles and pieced the best parts together. But don't call this a mash up CD. As proven with his first single,
"Symponies", Black has a knack for concocting sonic creations that hit hard like Hip-Hop, infuse strings in a way an Alt-Rock group might, and pops like a Top 40 song. The combination to the style was cracked while experimenting on various mash ups for DJ sets that resulted in the blog busting track
"HYPNTZ", a cover of
"Hypnotize" by
The Notorious B.I.G. With the internet on fire over the track, all the attention got back to the powers that reside over the late rapper's estate and Dan was forced to ditch the track due to copy write laws. Don't feel sorry for the man, because out of that door closing he was forced to try something completely original. Using the same track and melody, Dan wrote
"Symphonies" which then led to self producing his entire album. With blogs on fire once again and a video for his single (now featuring
Kid Cudi) he is on tour to promote the project. During his time in New York we caught up with him on the phone to find out more.
