ARMAND VAN HELDEN: Video Interview

ARMAND VAN HELDEN
NO END IN SITE
You know the saying about old dogs and tricks right, well, Armand Van Helden's never heard it. In an industry where a 5 year career is an achievement, what do you call an artist who hasn't slowed down in nearly 20 years? Veteran seems too light a word. Producing seems to be as easy as breathing for the Boston native, creating hits that include My My My, Witch Doktor, U Don't Know Me, NYC Beat, and too many remixes to count. Even when the public (and DJ's) have felt he's finally lost it, time proves that he was simply ahead of the curve. Evidence can be found in daringly original tracks like "I Want Your Soul", an 80's Freestyle influenced dance song that seems more relevant 2 years after its release.
It's true, he has had deeper desires to be a Hip-Hop star but the hands of Fate had other plans for him. House music was his destiny but his love for Hip-Hop is an obvious inspiration for his brand of funk and signature bass lines. Lucky for us he is still working the international Dance circuit (although not frequently enough) and keeping up with the trends to dominate dancefloors. Hipster Overkill was treated to 2 sets within a week in Washington DC and Miami for the Winter Music Conference and the notoriously reclusive and rumored rude boy proved to be anything but, offering us a chance to talk on camera.
MC Shawn Lucas pulled him to the side for a few minutes before his set at DC Star Night Club this past March to talk about the early days, the art of remixing, and his new track on the latest Bloc Party CD.
